POLST Taskforce Prepares for Spring Train-the-Trainers Workshop

At the WEOLCC annual meeting last fall, a group was formed to focus on providing and monitoring ongoing education efforts regarding the Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form in Washington State. The POLST Program Taskforce will unveil the first fruit of its labor this spring - a train-the-trainers educational workshop entitled "Honoring Wishes Near the End of Life - Successful Implementation of the POLST."

Scheduled for May 19th at the Providence Center for Faith and Healing in Spokane, the training will provide a train-the-trainer curriculum in advance care planning and implementation of the POLST in each institution. The workshop will be focused around two different objectives:

The POLST form
1. Understanding the importance of advance care planning and facilitating patients receiving the care they want when unable to speak for themselves.

2. Describing the following:
  • What is POLST?
  • The history of POLST
  • Philosophy of POLST
  • How POLST works
  • Comfort care in the SNF and the community
  • Harmony with state and federal regulations

Speakers will include James Shaw, MD, Paul Cunningham, MD, Sally Denton, RN, NHA, and Sharmon Figenshaw, ARNP. The target audience for the workshop will be health professionals in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Outreach to hospice and home care is planned as well.

The Taskforce intends to hold at least one training a year on either side of the mountains; they are looking at an October-November date for a west-side training.

A brochure and a cover letter to preface the brochure will be sent electronically. For more information, contact Sally Denton at (509) 474-2161.
