WAMPAC helps elect qualified candidates who support the practice of medicine to the Washington state legislature and federal office.

In the legislature you compete with all of the other interest groups for the passage of policy and revenue bills. When physicians belong to WAMPAC the ability to compete in the political environment of the legislature is increased.

You’ve heard it before: Politics drives the process that drives the policy.

WAMPAC contributions put physicians in the driver's seat.

AMA Candidate Workshop and Campaign School

Learn how to be a campaign volunteer - or to run for office

If you’re in medicine, you are in politics—whether you like it or not. A whole range of issues— medical liability reform, health information technology, uninsured patients and scope of practice—reminds us that politics (and government) plays a role in how you are allowed to practice.

To ensure that your voice is always heard, the American Medical Association Political Action Committee (AMPAC) offers two education programs every year to AMA members, spouses and medical society staff members. One is geared for those interested in running for office; the other for those who would like to be more involved in campaigns.

The Candidate Workshop is ideal for physicians considering a run for public office – at any level. During a three-day period, you will learn how to craft a campaign plan and message, the secrets of effective fund raising, how to choose the right advertising and how to become an engaging public speaker.

Get answers to your questions, and find out if running for public office is for you! The next Candidate Workshop will be held Feb. 13-15, 2009.

The Campaign School is an intensive, hands-on curriculum for training physicians as expert campaign volunteers. During the Campaign School, participants are put on campaign “staffs” and run a simulated congressional campaign. Daily lectures prepare you for nightly campaign exercises, including taping a radio commercial, writing a fund-raising letter and speaking for your candidate. Other topics include vote targeting and TV, internet and direct mail communication.

During this rigorous five-day program, you will develop a new understanding of how campaigns are run. As a graduate of the Campaign School, candidates will rely on you to give them advice on strategy, message and campaign plans. Campaign School will be in session again April 15-19, 2009.

Both programs will be held at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City, Va. Enrollment is open to AMA members, spouses and medical society staff members. AMPAC covers lodging, meals, tuition and course materials—a significant benefit of AMA membership.

For an application, visit AMPAC online. For additional questions, please contact Jim Wilson, political education programs manager at jim.wilson@ama-assn.org or (202)789-7465.
