This year's opening session keynote address will feature Dr. Carl Hammerschlag, speaking on "Healthcare at the Crossroads: Sustaining Our Healing Spirit."

The WSMA Annual House of Delegates meeting is an opportunity for physicians around the state and across all specialties to come together to set the policies and goals for the Association.

The policy "heart" of the meeting will be reference committee meetings on Saturday morning, followed by the House of Delegates session on Sunday.  It is the House that sets the broad policy course for the WSMA.

There are two opportunities for debate on every item of business brought before the House. The first comes during the reference committee hearings that are open to every WSMA member. Following these hearings, each of the three reference committees prepares a report recommending specific action and takes these recommendations to the entire House of Delegates on Sunday morning for its final action.

The annual meeting is not just about setting WSMA policies, although this is a large part of the meeting. It also provides educational and networking opportunities for all physicians.

On Friday and Saturday a variety of scientific sessions will be available, all providing additional CME Category I credit.

 RESOLUTIONS AND REPORTS

Please note that the final deadline for receipt of resolutions at the WSMA Seattle office was August 24. Resolutions received after this date will be considered late and must have the consent of two-thirds of the House of Delegates at its opening session in order to be considered.

In order to streamline the processing of House of Delegates business, the Speakers require that all resolutions be submitted to the WSMA via email to hod@wsma.org. The receipt of all resolutions is confirmed by a return email message. If you do not receive a confirmation email, your resolution has not been received.

Upon receipt of each resolution, WSMA staff will attach relevant WSMA policy and will have legal counsel review resolutions for possible legal concerns. In addition, a fiscal note setting forth the estimated resource implications of the proposed policy or action will be generated by WSMA staff in consultation with the resolution author.

When drafting resolutions, please keep in mind the following:

  • The title of the resolution should concisely reflect the action for which it calls.
  • Information contained in the resolution should be checked for accuracy.
  • The Resolved portions of the resolution must stand alone, since the House adopts only the Resolved portions and the Whereas portions do not appear in the Policy Compendium.
  • Each Resolve clause in a resolution must be followed by one of the following notations indicating the purpose of the resolve:

a. New HOD policy
b. Modify current HOD policy
c. Modify Bylaws
d. Rescind HOD policy
e. Reaffirm HOD policy
f.  Directive to take action
