2010 WSMA Leadership Development Conference

2010 Leadership Conference

Friday, May 14 - Saturday, May 15

This year’s featured speakers include Wayne and Mary Sotile and David Marx.

Wayne and Mary Sotile will teach you how to maximize your impact and rekindle your passion for empowering the people in your organization to let go of what’s holding them back from thriving. The Sotiles will demonstrate specific skills that will boost your personal resilience and professional effectiveness and show you how to deepen your relationships with the people you lead.

David Marx, author of “Patient Safety and the Just Culture: A Primer for Healthcare Executives”, is a human error management consultant to hospitals, regulators, and air carriers. Combining his knowledge from a law degree and technical capability from an engineering degree, he helps develop safety-supportive enforcement and disciplinary systems. David’s firm, Outcome Engineering, is the curator of the Just Culture Community – a web-based resource for those building safety supportive cultures. David’s work is currently being implemented in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Connecticut as well as North Carolina.

Dear Colleague:

Please plan to join us at the WSMA Leadership Development Conference - Essence of Leadership - May 14 and 15 at Campbell's Resort on Lake Chelan. This has become known as one of the best meetings in the Northwest, and not one to miss.

This year's conference will feature a truly outstanding faculty and will include a mix of plenary and interactive breakout sessions. These sessions are designed to enhance your leadership skills and provide practical information that you can use as soon as you get home. Our goal is to provide you with concrete ideas and skills that you can use, regardless of the type or size of your organization.

Friday's plenary presenters will include Wayne and Mary Sotile, co-directors of Sotile Psychological Associates and Real Talk, Inc. in Winston-Salem NC. Wayne is one of our most popular speakers ever, and we are delighted that he is able to return with his wife for a couple of totally new and different presentations. David Marx will discuss Leadership and Fostering a Safe and Just Culture at the afternoon session and will follow-up with a hands-on how-to work shop. Friday night's dinner will feature Brad Nieder, MD who will provide an enlightening and inspiring look how humor in the workplace can enhance communication, aid creativity and improve productivity. On Saturday, Daniel O'Connell, Ph.D. will talk about what patients and the health care team expect of their leaders.

Breakout sessions will cover physicians' role in patient safety and quality improvement, situational awareness and medical leadership, accountable care organizations, and hot topics facing today's medical staff.

This is a great line-up of thought provoking speakers!

The conference is held in conjunction with the WSMA Board of Trustees retreat, and leadership participants are invited to attend the Board dinner on Saturday night as well as the Board meeting on Sunday morning. You can use the free time on Saturday afternoon to spend quality time with your family at a resort setting, network with colleagues, play golf, tour some of the newest and best wineries, relax and read a good book, or bring your board and have your own strategic planning retreat.

I'm looking forward to this year's conference and hope to see you there. I'm confident you will find it informative, thought provoking and energizing.

Sincerely,

Deborah J. Harper, MD
President
