Medication Disposal
Help stop drug misuse and abuse. Safely dispose of unused prescriptions.
When it comes to keeping our kids safe, we can all play a part to ensure that prescription medicines that do so much to improve our health aren't misused. Misuse of prescription medicines is one of the fastest growing sources of drug abuse among teens. For many kids it is easier to steal prescription medicines than to buy narcotics and the medicine cabinet is the easiest place to find them.
Keeping unused medicines out of their hands is quick and easy. Simply follow these guidelines based on guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency:
• Don't flush unused medicines. • Mix medicines in a sealable plastic bag with coffee grounds, kitty litter or sawdust, and water. This prevents tampering by people or animals. • Seal the bag and throw it in your garbage. Studies show that this is the best way to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way - keeping them out of the water and avoiding extra driving to dispose of the medicines. • Destroy prescription information to keep your privacy secure.
