Tips on Choosing a Doctor
Referrals:
When looking for a physician:
- Ask family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers
- Contact local county
medical societies. Many county medical societies have
referral services.
- Contact a doctor referral service at a hospital.
You can look into a physician's credentials by logging
on to the Washington State Department of Health website.
Check out the Washington State Medical Association's Physician
Locator website. This site provides list of doctors, by
specialty, who practice near you.
Visit the "Doctor Finder" page on the American Medical
Association's website for information on training and board
certification. First questions to consider:
Does the physician have the training and background that
meets your needs?
Does the physician have privileges at the hospital of
your choice?
Is the physician part of your health plan?
Is the physician board certified or board eligible?
Is he or she a member of a professional association, such
as the Washington State Medical Association, the American
Medical Association or their county medical or specialty
society?
After answering these initial
questions considering calling the physicians staff to learn
more:
What are the office hours?
How many other doctors "cover" for the doctor when he or
she is not available?
How long does it take to make a routine appointment?
How long might I wait in the office before seeing a doctor?
What happens if I need to cancel an appointment?
Does the office send reminders about prevention tests
- for example, pap smears?
What do I do if I need urgent care or have an emergency?
Other qualities to look for:
Does the doctor encourage you to ask questions?
Do you feel as if he/she is listening to you and your concerns?
Does the doctor explain things clearly?
Does the doctor treat you with respect?
