Legal Issues for Physicians’ Practices - Protecting Your Practice
Register now for this important seminar!
Contrary to the old saying: What you don't know can hurt you. Without a doubt, legal concerns pose the greatest threats to a physician's practice, given the many complexities that state and federal laws impose.
Few practices can afford to have an attorney "in-house" to provide immediate guidance on those concerns, so physicians, managers and staff need to improve their knowledge base as much as possible. You must know what to do and what not to do in the various problematic scenarios that might occur.
That's where the WSMA can help you! We've identified the most commonly occurring and potentially serious operational problems that you may encounter and will train you on what actions to take to protect yourself and your practice. Participants will learn about: - New health laws passed during the 2008 Washington State Legislative Session and their impact on physician practices.
- New and proposed reporting requirements of physician unprofessional conduct—when to report, to whom to report, and what to do if someone files a report against you.
- The recent national class action settlement with Regence and Premera—What you need to know!
- New developments on health insurers and quality measurement, including New York State Attorney General actions.
- The laws on Medical Records and Disclosure of Patient Health Information.
- Stark II Laws: Latest developments on Self-Referral Regulations
Added Bonus! Seminar registrants will receive with their registration confirmation an Assessment Tool to pose questions beforehand to the presenters!
Who Should Attend This seminar is extremely valuable to all practice staff with responsibilities for clinical care or business operations. The entire practice team needs a thorough understanding of medical-legal issues so that each can monitor for potential legal pitfalls. "It's not my job" will not hold up if legal problems surface.
The Presenters Tim Layton, JD, is Director of Legal Affairs for the Washington State Medical Association. He has practiced law in New York and Washington, D.C. Most recently with the Seattle law firm of Carney Badley Spellman, he worked with the firm's government affairs practice group focusing on the representation of businesses and business trade associations before the state legislature and various state agencies.
Bob Perna, FACMPE is the Director of Health Care Economics for the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA). He has over 35 years' experience in the health care industry, having held positions in professional relations with a major health insurer and in managerial positions in private medical practices and community health organizations.
